Managing Performance in Oracle Applications R11 Using Statspack
There are many performance monitoring tools on the market, and most of them are excellent. These tools are carefully designed with hundreds of cumulative years of experience to permit novice DBAs to detect problems as if they were experienced DBAs. STATSPACK is not intended for novice DBAs. STATSPACK has no easy-to-use browser or GUI interface and only one single report. It was written primarily by a small team of developers in Oracle's Server Technologies development group, solely for the purpose of providing a diagnostic tool for Oracle Support. STATSPACK is designed simply to gather "snapshots" of information from Oracle's internal V$ views and X$ tables over time. It does not provide any guidance of how to use that data; that may come with time and product maturity. But it is the gathering of data over time that is of primary importance, as one can always analyze later.
