Cats, Dogs and ORA-01555 by Tim Gorman
It is one of the classic confrontations, rivaling that of liberals and conservatives, mongoose and cobra, girls and boys, women and men. It can be mild and a matter of light banter or it can be bitter and take on a life of its own. Sometimes, it spills over into irritated e-mail wars, retribution, and even violence.
Of course, I'm referring to the animosity that exists between development staff and administrators, namely Oracle application developers and Oracle database administrators.
OK, so we're not talking about anything earthshaking. I've witnessed square-offs between developers and DBAs and from a disinterested standpoint I felt it resembled something less than a pair of super-sonic jets dog-fighting and something more like accountants bickering over the merits of costed versus accrual accounting methods. Yawn!
Even so, animosity exists in some degree and while it may be slight and simmer below the surface, anything can cause it to flare. One such flashpoint concerns the ORA-01555 ("snapshot too old") error message from Oracle. The error itself is something that rarely seems to occur in development and testing environments, but pops up with maddening frequency in production.
